Lesson 6:
Energy Pyramid
Quiz on Chart - Thursday, December 18th
Lesson 6:
Energy Pyramid
Students will be able to...
Transfer their learning of energy pyramids to new situations.
I am successful when I can...
1) Review food chains and food webs.
2) Explore by actively reading about energy pyramids
3) Explain by turning and talking three times.
4) Elaborate by explaining to an AI friend.
5) Choose a question that demonstrates your ability to apply your knowledge to regents questions.
HS-LS2-4.
Use mathematical representations to support claims for the cycling of matter and flow of energy among organisms in an ecosystem.
1) Ecology End of Unit Test on October 7th
2) Tutoring every Wednesday in A-301 after 9th.
3) Biology club meeting in A-301 on Thursdays in A-301
Step 1) Regents Warm-Up
Step 2) Active Reading
Step 3) Because, But and So
Step 4) Stop n' Jot
Step 5) Application
Part 1
Warm-Up
Slow Reveal Diagram
Directions: Discuss the questions on each slide with your group. Do not go ahead of the class.
Part 2
Active Reading
(Explore)
Directions:
Step #1) Actively read the passage making seven annotations as you read in the margins.
Step #2) Remember, annotations include:
a) Word Association Game (example: Cellular Respiration - energy, ATP, mitochondria, oxygen, glucose)
b) Making connections between the text and past lessons, your life, books read, movies, video games etc
c) Rewriting important information in your own words
‼️ Does Not Include Underlining or Highlighting ‼️
Part 3
TN'T Times Three
(5 min)
Turn n' Talk
Numero Uno
Discuss!
If energy is lost through heat, do cold-blooded animals like snakes provide more energy to animals that eat them in the next trophic level?

Turn n' Talk
Numero Tres
If energy is lost through heat, do cold-blooded animals like snakes provide more energy to animals that eat them in the next trophic level?
Directions:
Answer the question above in three sentences with your group using the conjunctions
BECAUSE
BUT
&
SO
Remember to the vocabulary to the right in your conjunction sentences.
(General Academic Words)
(Biology Specific)
Example: Mr. Pinho is tired BECAUSE he was up late making an awesome lesson for his students, BUT it's ok since they appreciate him SO it was worth the effort and bags under his eyes.
Part 4
Stop n' Jot
(5 min)
Key Concept #1: The ten percent rule states that each trophic level can only give 10% of its energy to the next level. The other 90% is lost as HEAT & METABOLIC WASTE
Key Concept #2: All energy pyramids start with energy from the Sun which is transferred to the first trophic level of producers. The bottoms of the pyramid always has the most energy. As we go up the pyramid the amount of energy decreases.
Key Concept #3:
Vocab - Trophic Level – Each of the levels in an ecosystem, where organisms share the same function and nutritional relationship within the food chain, food web or energy pyramid.
Part 5) Exit Ticket
