Happy Halloween!
Learning Intention
Students will be able to analyze how biotic and abiotic factors are interdependent (depend on each other) and limit the size of populations in an ecosystem.
Success Criteria
I am successful when I can:
1) Review levels of ecological organization to regents questions.
2) Engage with a scientific issue that is threatening our honey production.
3) Explore how abiotic and biotic factors can limit the size of a population
4) Explain by comprehending key concepts and scientific vocabulary.
5) Elaborate by interacting with an A.I friend who will help us improve our writing.
6) Evaluate my own learning by reflecting on today's lesson.
Step 1) Warm-Up (Review)
Step 2) Engage
Step 3) Explore
Step 4) Explain
Step 5) Elaborate
Step 6) Evaluate
HS-LS2-6.
Evaluate claims, evidence, and reasoning that the complex interactions in ecosystems maintain relatively consistent numbers and types of organisms in stable conditions, but changing conditions may result in a new ecosystem.
Quiz Thursday 9/15
Part 1
Warm-Up
(5 min)
Part 2
Turn n'Talk
(5 min) (1E)
Turn n' Talk:
How do you feel about bugs?
Are you curious about them?
Afraid of them?
Disgusted by them?
Part 3
Turn n' Talk Numero Dos
(5 min) (2E)
Directions:
Step 1) Create a See, Think, Wonder chart in your notebook
Step 2) View the graph and fill out your chart.
Step 3) Turn n' Talk with your group. What do you see, think and wonder.
A lot of students wondered why some of the bug populations are decreasing.
It could be because of ABIOTIC or BIOTIC factors.
Both could be acting as LIMITING FACTORS.
Let's get familiar with these new science words...
Step 4
Abiotic vs Biotic
(10 min) (3E)
1) Abiotic Factors: The non-living factors in an environment such as water, soil and climate.
2) Biotic Factors: Living things, such as plants and animals, that are part of an ecosystem. Also includes food.
3) Limiting Factor: Anything that prevents a population from growing. Could be biotic or abiotic.
Step 5
Actively Read
(10 min) (4E)
Directions:
Step #1: Circle all of the BIOTIC factors in the article.
Step #2: Underline all of the ABIOTIC factors in the article.
Step 6
Turn n' ChatGPT
(5 min) (5E)
