Part 1: Warm-Up
Jenny Tutone, a 38-year-old woman, walks into the clinic with a weary smile on her face. She has been experiencing a range of symptoms that have left her concerned. As she sits down in the examination room, she begins to share her story with the attentive group of 9th-grade students, acting as doctors.
Symptoms:
Ms. Tutone explains that she has been feeling unusually fatigued, even after a full night's sleep. She describes persistent joint pain, especially in her fingers and knees, which has been affecting her ability to carry out her daily activities. She mentions frequent headaches, occasional chest pain, stomach pain and a persistent low-grade fever that comes and goes.
Additionally, Ms. Tutone notes that she has developed a noticeable rash across her face and neck, which seems to worsen when she spends time in the sun. She has also been struggling with shortness of breath and occasional difficulty swallowing.

Exchanging gases needed/created during cellular respiration. Oxygen comes into the lungs and goes into the blood stream. It is carried to each cell so that it can do cellular respiration.
Carbon Dioxide is waste made during cellular respiration. It comes out of the cell and goes into the blood. It eventually comes out of the blood stream and exits the lungs when you exhale.
Diffusion of ____occurs _____:
Carbon Dioxide from cells to capillaries, capillaries to alveoli,
Oxygen from alveoli to capillaries, capillaries to cells
Main Structures:
Nose, Mouth, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles, Lungs, Alveoli
