Key Concepts
Human Population Growth:
🔑 #1: Human population has been increasing dramatically due to advances in INDUSTRIALIZATION and MEDICAL ADVANCES.
🔑 #2: An increase in human population puts a strain on FINITE resources. The negative effects humans have had on the environment are mostly due to the increasing human population.
Water Pollution:
🔑 #3: BIOMAGNIFICATION is an increase in concentration of a substance in the tissues of organisms at you move up trophic levels.
🔑 #4: SURFACE RUNOFF occurs when there is more water than land can absorb. The extra water flows across the surface of the land and into nearby waterways and picks up pesticides, toxins, chemicals and heavy metals, depositing them into our waterways.
Renewable Energy:
🔑 #5: Fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, are all examples of nonrenewable energy sources. Burning them releases chemical into the air that damages the environment.
🔑 #6: Hydroelectric power is when we utilize energy from moving water. Wind Turbines harness the wind for their kinetic energy.
🔑 #7: Solar Energy when we convert energy from the sun into useable energy. Think solar panels.
Climate Change:
🔑 #8: Global warming causes the Earth to get warmer so polar ice caps melt and ocean water gets warmer, harming people, animals and plants
🔑 #9: Climate changes like global warming is the result of humans burning fossil fuels and cutting down trees causing too many greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide into the air.
Ozone Depletion:
🔑 #10:CFC's in aerosol and coolants as well as laughing gas and other aerosols damage the Ozone layer that protects Earth. The Ozone layer surrounds the Earth and protects it from harmful UV light rays.
🔑 #11: When UV light hits skin cells, it damages the cells DNA,genetic material causing mutations. These mutations in skin cells can lead to skin cancer.
