EOU Exam on Thursday, May 1st
Learning Intention:
Identify ecological levels of organization and apply knowledge of vocabulary and key concepts to regents-type questions.
Success Criteria:
I am successful when I can...
1) Reflect on my previous exam and determine next steps for the next exam.
2) Discover a new and strange organism and create questions about how it survives.
3) Discuss with my peers the requirements for all life.
4) Explore an article to learn about the different levels of organization in ecology
5) View an image and explain which level of organization best describes it.
6) Apply my knowledge to regents questions.
Agenda:
Step 1) SEL Warm-Up
Step 2) Sea Pig Video (Engage)
Step 3) Article (Explore)
Step 4) Levels of Organization Argumentative Paragraph (Explain)
Step 5) Exit Ticket (Elaborate)

Part 2
Discovering New Animals
(Engage)
Directions: Create the See, Think, Wonder chart below in your notebook. As you watch the video, write down:
👁️🗨️See - Direct Observation (ex. The animal is pink)
🤔Think - Inference (ex. I think they are deep in the ocean because...)
❔ Wonder - Questions (ex. What is that animals name?)
Our overall question this unit is to figure out how Sea Pigs can live in such an extreme environment.
Turn n' Talk, what do you think organisms like the sea pig need in order to survive?
Part 3
Levels of Ecological Organization
(Engage)
Part 4
Stop n'Jot
(5 min)
Individual - One member of the species.
Population - All the members of a single species in a defined area.
Example: The population of deer on Staten Island.
Community - All the different species in a defined area interacting together
Example: In Wolfe's pond park, the animal community includes ducks, geese, turtles, deer, squirrels, rabbits and more!
Ecosystem-All the living and non-living factors in a defined area.
Biome- A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, e.g. forest or tundra.
Biosphere -The regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the earth occupied by living organisms.
AND JOT....
Part 5
Ecological Levels of Organization Practice
(10 min)
Directions:
Work in groups to identify the level of organization for each of the pictures below. After you have identified it, write a paragraph explaining why the picture is that level of organization. Use the sample and the definitions above to help you.
Claim- This picture of a snail shows an individual.
Evidence - The evidence that suggests that this snail is an individual is that it is the only member of the species shown.
Reasoning - Since this picture only contains the single snail and does not have other living or non-living factors, it must be an individual.
Part 6
Exit Ticket
