EOU Exam on Thursday, May 1st
Learning Target
Investigate a human activity that is harming polar bears by analyzing graphs and annotating an article.
Success Criteria
I am successful when I can....
1) Engage by hypothesizing why polar bears are developing skin lesions.
2) Explore the link between ozone depletion and skin cancer rates.
3) Explain how ozone depletion is caused
4) Elaborate by applying knowledge to explain the impact on polar bears.
Standards
HS-LS2-7.
Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity
Reminders
Half regents due January 10th.
Part 1:
Warm-Up
Something Looks Sus
(One of Many is Incorrect)
(8 min)
Directions: View all three problems and answer the questions:
1) Which one is incorrect?
2) Explain why it is incorrect
3) Write the correct answer.
Part 2
Hook
Engage
(5 min)
Investigation:
Polar bears are an endangered species that live in Antartica. Recently, scientists who study polar bear populations have noticed that many bears have started losing their hair and some are even developing large oozing lesions as you can see in the picture to the right. Scientists believe that the cause of the skin condition is tied to human activity.
1) What could be causing the hair loss and skin conditions of the polar bears?
2) How could it be related to the activities of humans?
Part 3
Slow Reveal Graph
(Explore)
(5 min)
Part 4:
Article
(Explain)
(15 min)
Directions:
Step #1) Actively read the passage making SEVEN (7) annotations as you read in the margins.
Step #2) Remember, annotations include:
a) Word Association Game (example: Cellular Respiration - energy, ATP, mitochondria, oxygen, glucose)
b) Making connections between the text and past lessons, your life, books read, movies, video games etc
c) Rewriting important information (key concepts) in your own words
‼️ Does Not Include Underlining or Highlighting ‼️
Part 5:
Turn n' ChatGPT
(Elaborate)
(5 min)
Directions: Use the information from the article and graphs in order to explain why polar bears are getting higher rates of skin cancer.
1) CFC's (aerosals) and refrigerators/air conditionaires damage the Ozone layer that protects Earth.
2) Without an Ozone layer, UV light reaches the surface of our planet.
3) When UV light hits skin cells, it damages the cells genetic material causing mutations.
4) Mutations in skin cells can lead to skin cancer.
