Lesson 3:
Heterotroph / Autotroph
Question:
How do organism get energy?
EOU Exam on Thursday, May 1st
Question:
How do organism get energy?
Learning Intention
Students will be able to...
Apply what they have learned about heterotrophs and autotrophs to new scenarios in Biology.
Success Criteria
I am successful when I can...
2) Engage by turning and talking with my peers about the mysterious sea pig.
3) Explore by reading a difficult scientific text
4) Explain by reviewing new vocabulary
5) Elaborate by completing a frayer model
6) Evaluate by discussing new ecological situations with my A.I. friend.
Agenda
Homework / Reminders
Step 1) Warm-Up
Step 2) Active Reading
Step 3) Frayer Model Musical Chairs
Step 4) Key Concept Review
Step 5) Exit Ticket
Marking Period ends November 5th
Tutoring Thursdays in A-301 2-4 pm. Be there or be square.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN.
Learning Standard:
HS-LS1-5: Use a model to illustrate how photosynthesis transforms light energy into stored chemical energy.
Step 1) Warm-Up
Levels of Organization Review
(10 min)
Part 2
Turn n' Talk Numero Uno
Engage
(3 min)
Turn n' Talk: After watching the video, discuss:
1) How the sea pig and other deep dwelling organisms get their energy.
2) How do plants 6000~ meters beneath the ocean get their energy?
Part 3
Heterotroph / Autotroph
Active Reading
Explore
(15 min)
Directions: Actively read the article below.
Create FIVE annotations as you read.
Use the supports provided below to assist you.
Remember, annotations include connections to the text, definitions, key concepts and word associations.
Step 4) Frayer Model
Musical Chairs Activities
Explain
(15 min)
1) Autotroph (Producer) - An organism that's able to make its own food, usually through the process of photosynthesis. Does not rely on other organisms for its food.
2) Heterotroph (Consumer) - An organism that eats other organisms in order to get energy.
A) Omnivore - An organism that eats both plants and animals.
(Ex. Humans, dogs, bears)
B) Carnivore - An organism that feeds only on animals.
(Ex. Lion, Tiger)
C) Herbivore - An organism that feeds on plants.
(Ex. Deer, caterpillar, grasshopper etc)
D) Decomposer - An organism that breaks down dead plants, animals and their waste.
(Ex. Bacteria and Fungi)
AND JOT
Model
Directions:
Step 1) Fill out your name at the top and your period.
Step 2) Fill in the center word
Step 3) Exchange papers in your group until the music stops. When the music stops, fill out any box left that you want. Write your name on the box.
Step 4) Repeat
Step 5) When all the boxes are full, return the Frayer model to the group member.

Sunlight is the main source of energy for life on Earth.
Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction, from the sun to autotrophs and then to various heterotrophs.
Only 10 percent of the energy is transferred between organisms when consumed.
