Lesson 2
Diffusion & Concentration
EOU Exam on Thursday, May 1st
Diffusion & Concentration
Students will be able to discover key concepts of diffusion through experiments and apply their discoveries to the function of the cell membrane.
Review diffusion key concept and vocabulary through regents questions.
Determine the direction of diffusion based on the concentration.
Apply my knowledge to a cell structure.
Demonstrate my knowledge of concentration gradient by answering regent questions.

Activity 3:
Activity 4:
Activity 5:
Each cell is covered by a membrane that performs a number of important functions for the cell. These include: separation from its outside environment, controlling which molecules enter and leave the cell, and recognition of chemical signals. The processes of diffusion and active transport are important in the movement of materials in and out of cells. (1.2g)

Stop n' Jot
sc4 - (10 min)
🔑Key Concept:
1) Diffusion Concentration Gradient: Molecules naturally move from a high concentration to a low concentration of molecules. This does not require energy. This is called passive transport.
2) Equilibrium:
Equal number of molecules on both sides of the semi-permeable membrane.
Activity 5
Zooming in on the cell membrane
(5 min)
Key Concept:
1) Cell membrane seperates the inside and outside of the cell.
2) The cell membrane has proteins in it called receptors. They stick up from the surface of the cell membrane.
3) Receptors receive chemical messages from other cells, telling the receiving cell to do something specific.
4) Cell Receptors have a specific shape. Chemical Messenger molecules have to have the complimentary shape for the cell to get the message.
Lock and Key Model #2.
