A study was done to determine the effect of a temperature increase on an ocean ecosystem. Panels equipped with heating elements were placed on the ocean floor 50 feet below the surface in the Antarctic Ocean. Some of the panels were heated so that they were 1ºC warmer than the water surrounding them. Others were heated to be 2ºC warmer, and some were not heated. Over a period of nine months, the researchers returned to the site and documented the changes in marine life they observed.
They noted that 1ºC of warming resulted in a substantial change in marine life. One species of invertebrate grew rapidly and became the dominant species. It replaced multiple other species typically present in the area. The results were less consistent on the panels that were 2ºC warmer than the water surrounding them.
The photographs on the left show the results observed on the three sets of panels.
Based on this experiment, one result of the future warming of the Antarctic Ocean could be
A. an increase in the stability of the Antarctic ecosystem
B. the disruption of existing Antarctic marine food webs
C. marine organisms evolving more rapidly in order to compete for resources
D. the need to import predators to eat the tiny invertebrates

Part 4
Check for Understanding #2
A water sample changes from pH 8 to pH 6. Which statement correctly describes this change?
A. The water becomes more basic.
B. The water becomes neutral.
C. The water becomes more acidic.
D. The water’s acidity stays the same.
Part 3

Graphic Organizer
Success Criteria #2 & #3
(12 min)
1) Read two paragraphs independently.
2) Discuss with your table: What is the main idea of each paragraph?
3) Write the gist of each paragraph in the matching box. Use your own words and focus on the most important information.
4) Repeat for the next two paragraphs until your organizer is complete.
Part 4:
Real-Life Model
Success Criteria #4
Part 4:
CFU #3
(Biology Regents Spring 2024 Sample Cluster - Questrion 3)
Carbon dioxide dissolves in ocean water and forms carbonic acid, making the water more acidic.
How would this change most likely affect organisms that build calcium carbonate shells and skeletons?
A. Their shells and skeletons would become stronger as acidity increases.
B. Their shells and skeletons could dissolve more easily and become harder to build and maintain.
C. They would replace calcium carbonate with carbon dioxide to build their shells.
D. They would no longer need shells or skeletons to survive.
