Unit 1
Scientific Inquiry
Lesson #1:
The Scientific Process
and
Team Building
Learning Target
I can use the scientific process and teamwork to solve a problem by making observations, testing ideas, communicating with my group, and changing my approach based on evidence.
Success Criteria
NGSS Standard
Planning and Carrying Out Investigations
Plan an investigation or test a design individually and collaboratively to produce data to serve as the basis for evidence as part of building and revising models, supporting explanations for phenomena, or testing solutions to problems.
Reminders
Contract due
Materials due
Hand in paper towel or tissues etc any day this week.
Part 1:
SEL Warm-Up
(5 min)
In your notebooks, answer the following question:
What is your favorite Science movie and explain why you love it so much?
My favorite Science movie is the matrix because it shows the dangers of A.I. and how all our evidence for how the world works is based on our own perspective and observations.
My favorite Science movie is Jurassic Park because it shows the amazing things that scientists can do with DNA. Also, when it come out it was science fiction, but scientists now have the technology to bring back extinct species like the dire wolf and the wooly mamouth and some are actually doing it.
Part 2:
Team Building Activity
(5 min)
In your groups, use the four (4) pieces in the ziplock bag at your table to create a square.
Part 3:
(5 min)
In your groups, use the five pieces at your table to create a square.
Part 4
Science and Engineering Practices
(5 min)
In this activity, you acted as a scientist and you carried out science and engineering principles by:
testing different approaches,
observing the results,
revising their strategy,
collaborating with others, and using evidence from previous attempts to improve their solution.
Part 5
Exit Ticket
