Why do pregnant women need to be cautious about the medications they take?
A pregnant woman contracts a bacterial infection that does not cross the placenta. How might the baby still be affected, and what biological processes could explain this?
Part 4: Researching Factor (15 minutes)
Directions: Below, each group has been assigned a different factor that affects pregnancy.
Step 1) Research the factor with your group. Click on the image beneath your group name to open the link.
Step 2) Then create a poster that informs people about the factors effect.
Part 5: Take-Away
Past regents have asked about the effect of alcohol, cigarettes (nicotine), toxins, pesticides, retinoids, overall diet, Folic acid and infectious diseases on pregnancy.
Alcohol, cigarettes (nicotine), toxins, pesticides and other negative chemicals are more likely to harm a fetus in early stages of pregnancy MORE than later stages because many essential organs are forming. These chemicals can diffuse from the mother's blood into the baby through the placenta.
Folic acid prevents major birth defects of the brain, spine and nervous system.
An overall good diet is necessary in order for a fetus to develop correctly, especially during early pregnancy when important organs are forming.
