Lesson 3:
Meiosis
EOU Exam on Thursday, May 1st
Lesson 3:
Meiosis
Students will be able to differentiate the process of meiosis from mitosis and determine how changes to gametes affect offspring created through sexual reproduction.
I am successful when I can...
1) Differentiate between Mitosis and Meiosis.
2) Identify when fertilization occurs.
3) Synthesize new words into my vocabulary.
4) Apply my knowledge of meiosis to regents questions.
1) Spiraling Something Looks Sus'
2) TNT x 3
3) Active Reading Cengage Article
4) Search and Unseen
5) Take-Away
6) Meiosis Exit Ticket
Part 1:
Spiraling Something Looks Sus'
1) Cell
2) Organelle
3) Tissue
4) Organ
5) Organism
The grasses introduced could become invasive in the new area and could out compete the native plants, causing their populations to decline.
If the sharks cannot detect their prey, they may not survive. If the sharks do not survive, then their prey's population would increase. This would cause changes in the entire food web ecosystem.

Sex Cell Mutation?
(12 min)
Actively read the article below:
Step #1) Create 5 annotations in the margins. (connection life, connection to text, connection to our story, paraphrasing key concepts, writing new vocabulary in student friendly definitions)
Step #2) Answer the Search Question if you are in the front row. Answer the Unseen question if you are in the back row.
Part 4:
Take Away
Key Concept:
1) Meiosis is the process that creates sex cells. Sex cells include sperm and eggs. Meiosis takes one regular cell and turns it into four daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes of a normal cell.
Meiosis: The process where a single cell divides twice to make sex cells (gametes).
Gametes: Sex cells which include sperm and eggs. Have half the amount of chromosomes of normal cells.
Fertilization: When the sperm and egg combine.
Zygote: The cell that is created when the sperm and egg combine. Has all the DNA needed to become an organism. (picture is an embryo but shows what the zygote will eventually divide into once the zygote undergoes mitosis)
